Getting credit restoration can never be instantaneous, but when done properly and depending on the causes of the credit rating issue, it can take as little as a week.
The first step, of course, is to access your credit report. A credit report can be requested quite easily by phone, snail mail or even on the Internet. If you do not know what the official credit bureaus are and how to contact them, then you can ask your bank or credit union for their contact information. Every person is allowed to receive a copy of their credit report every year. It is even possible to have instant access to the report online, but then you might have to pay. Do not hesitate to request a report from each existing credit reporting bureau as there might be a few discrepancies between the reports.
Once you have your reports, the next step is to analyse the reports. Take note of any negative point and see if can be lawfully disputed. It is important to remember that you cannot request for information to be removed simply because you do not want it there. Credit restoration using the dispute procedure is only possible if the report contains erroneous items or is incomplete.
Once you have identified the information you would like to change, then choose the most adapted dispute method. You can choose to call the credit reporting bureau and then mail them the supporting documents, write a dispute letter with supporting documents and send them by certified mail (which is the most recommended method), or file the dispute online. In any case, it is important to not forget to mention full name (as in your ID), full address, social security number, the report number, and the exact items in the report that are disputed. You can include a copy of the report with notes on what is disputed if you deem it to be helpful. Send the dispute to each bureau and keep a copy of each document sent for yourself. After a dispute, credit restoration should not take more than 30 days. If no response is received within that deadline, contact the bureau by phone as well as by mail to notify them of the delay. The law also mentions that in the case of no response to a dispute, then the item must be removed, at least temporarily until the case has been studied.
Of course if you have more serious debt issues, than it can take much longer. That’s when you might need a credit restoration agency or debt relief company to assist you. But buyer beware, some of these organizations are not looking out for your best interests, while others do care to help you restore your credit.
